the 3-point hitch on my JD 955 fails to come down after the tractor has been used for a while. Once the machine has cooled down it again functions normally. The hydraulics for the FEL function properly even when the 3-point does not. I,ve tried adjusting the flow control valve but that has not helped. Any other ideas out there?

hornak, Does the problem occur with the engine running or off? If it drops normaly with the engine off it might be something to do with the three pt. valve it's self or there probably is a flow control valve somewhere in the circit that could be favoring the three pt. Has the hydraulic system developed any strange hissing sound that wasn't there before? Give us a little more info. and I'm sure someone on the board can help you out. Have a great day, Frank. ....

I don't know if it doesn't lower when it's carrying a load, unloaded or both. I don't know why it'd depend on how long the tractor operated but some hitches do need some encouragement to lower when they're unloaded.
On position control 3ph's, a closed flow control valve will prevent it from lowering, but a poppet spool valve has to open as well. Again I don't know why it only happen after some operation but there are 3ph linkage and adjustment possibilities and an outside chance that the flow control valve isn't actually opening. ....

Have you verified that the 3 pt. hitch drop valve below the seat is in the full OPEN position? (usually turned full counter clockwise) If this is the cause, you can adjust it back in from the full open position to get the hitch drop rate you want. I don't think the 955 had an inline rockshaft valve filter like the early 4000 and 4000 Ten Series tractors had but might not be a bad idea to check. If this filter is clogged, it can cause this problem. ....
